    Parking brake failure

My wife parked our 2013 CC outside a friend's house earlier this week. A couple of hours later a neighbour informed the homeowner that a car had hit hers.

Turned out the car which had done the damage was ours! It had rolled across the road into another parked car.

Dealership has quoted 1100 for repairs to the other car - although I would guess 300 is closer to the mark.

My wife says she definitely engaged the brake, so where do we stand as far as getting the cars repaired is concerned (there's very slight damage to ours).

Obviously we need to get the brake checked out, but if it's shown to be faulty will VW be liable?

Also has anyone else had the parking brake fail on them?

I doubt it, they wriggle out of every claim, my other half has just had his handbrake seize, had to buy new rear calipers and motors and fitted them himself, got parts off ebay

Personally I'd have the handbrake checked by a dealer outside of your local area, if they deem the handbrake to be faulty then you have a case of argument with the dealer to whom you purchased the vehicle, would initially depend on how customer focused the dealer is, failing that then you could try the VW customer care centre, I'd probably email the CEO of VW citing that the vehicle is in breach of the sale of goods act as it would be reasonably expected for the handbrake to remain operational for,a mminimum, the duration of the vehicles manufacturer's warranty. ?

Have the parking brake ECU checked for codes and then the system for correct function and as Mr Caddy says, not by the same people you may approach with the issue. Make sure that the person checking the codes makes a proper printed copy of the result AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, does not delete any codes that are stored. if nothing shows up you will have a hard time proving she did not forget to press the button. The EPB system hasn't been exactly what I would call reliable in its early days but I have never heard of an incidence like this.

This is on a 2008 model of Passat cc, so previous to 2012, it seems that electronic parking brakes are not reliable on other makes of car in general, I work for a breakdown company and the amount of electronic handbrake problems we have to deal with is concerning, are they any better than manual lever types

The 2006>2008 3C rear calipers were awful BUT the seize on, not slip off and at least you can get them new from TRW for less than half the price of a genuine VW item. In 2008 the calipers were improved with different motors and gearing, these are failing so much that they are on back order with TRW from the factory to the level of thousands! I need two just before Christmas and we had to buy genuine at 430 each, there have also now been improved. Cars from 2012 were again revised and again in 2015 to a completely new design. What is wrong with cable handbrakes? They do not appear as cool as electric ones and can't do all the clever auto tricks electric ones can do.

Mrs Crasher said to me a few weeks back "when did a cars connectivity/media become so important?"

Yeah but is there any redress from Volkswagen as 2008 model electronic handbrakes were so bad, luckily my other half only paid 300 for both on eBay, but would it be worth contacting Volkswagen

The 2006>2008 versions were worse and VW didn't want to know, it was TRW's fault anyway, bad design.
