    ECM Problems

Hi there. New to VW Forum. Problem is, had a couple of lights come up on the dash on my wifes 05 1.6 petrol vw beetle, fault codes point to ECM module. Also the window wipers, electric windows, hazard lights and alarm have been doing their own thing recently. Where can i get one? Had a quick look online and finding it quite difficult. And where is it located in the car? Am i right in thinking it is underneath the window wipers? And also will i need to reprogram the new one? Thanks in advance.

What would lead you to believe the Engine Control Module has anything to do with the wipers, hazard lights and central convenience system (windows/alarm)? The unit is where you think it is but there are dozens of different units for just one model AND they are all directly programed to match each cars unique instrument panel coding which is tied into the ignition key transponder chip, changing the unit is not plug and play, it even causes professionals severe stress. What does tie the systems together is EMF.

01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications
17925 - Power Supply Relay for ECU (J271 or J363): Electrical Malfunction
17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
17911 - Load signal from Alternator Term. DF: Range/Performance / Implausible Signal
16485 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Implausible Signal
    16556 - System Too Rich, Bank 1

Well the window wipers and the electric windows have been an issue since day one. I have a friend who had a beetle with the same problems and he told me back then that it was the ecm and once he changed his it fixed them. So I've always had it in the bk of mind that it was an issue, and when a couple of those codes came up when those lights came up on the dash I immediately assumed it was the ecm and was on its last legs. I just read earlier that reprogramming it can be a nightmare so I'm debating to even get it fixed because of what the costs can be (the car is maybe worth 1500 at a push now realistically) and if it would be worth the cost compared to what the car is worth. I definitely need a new alternator too so thats more to add to the cost. I'm having my wife thinking of maybe getting a new car as it seems a lot of hassle for something that might not even fix the issues for a car thats worth 1500. Thanks for the info and advice anyway mate

The ECM (for the engine) only control's the engine but there are other ECM's throughout the car for various different functions, the Beetle 1C is just a PQ34 platform beneath the skin, so exactly like a Golf 4, Octavia 1, A3 TT, Leon 1 et al and so quite simple systems before the sketch of interconnected systems that was the PQ35, the Golf 5. You can't fix ANY car based on its market value, if you peruse that method you may as well give up and join the current PCP brigade, but they have their own residual value nightmare waiting just around the fiscal corner, it is just a matter of time.... What you need is diagnostics and not guess work, you know you need an alternator so put 1 and 1 together and make 2, what does the alternator do? What is your issue? The Alternator provides EMF and the problems you have indicate a lack of power....
