Engine Mount Failure

Postby allev8 » Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:28 pm

Hello there, I wonder if anyone could help? Whilst driving my Golf, I heard a very loud noise, but the car was driving ok, except for this noise that resembled a problem with my exhaust. I took it to the maindealer, who agreed, but said I have more than exhaust problems, my engine had dropped bcause the mounts had gone.He asked if we'd had an accident. Yes, I explained. In January '10 we hit ice and went into a wall, the bumper and light on the drivers side had to be replaced and it was on the same side that the engine mounts had completely gone.

The technician felt that was the problem and asked if a volkswagon recommended garage had done the work. NO, it was an insurance nominated garage. Further into the conversation, he felt that he could not be absolutely sure, but as the car is a 55 reg and only has 63000 miles on the clock, it was not something he would expect, had never seen before and felt there had to be a knock of some sort.

Needless to say the Insurance Company is denying culpability and refuses to pay out. Volkswagon, head office, felt that it was the accident, obviously!!!!! Saying that the engine would not just drop out.

The Technician said that if it was a hairline fracture it possibly would not have been picked up, but with driving, speed ramps, pot holes ect, the mounts would eventually fail. My son is a Volkswagon trained technician and he does agree with the technician, but you know, family doesn't count.

After speaking with the garage that did the work they said they had done the work, but not checked the engine, it wasn't in the spec.

The Insurance Engineer said that if there was a problem the Garage would have picked it up.

I guess the question is, has anyone heard of this problem before and what is their opinion? I just don't know where to go from here, I do want to avoid going from any more pillars and posts

Thanks in anticipation

If the lug has broken off the back of the block, this is a common problem and can just happen for no good reason BUT removing the mount and then refiiting it without using new bolts set to the correct torque can cause the upper lug to fail. In my opinion it is a poor design, there is just not enough metal there.

Thankyou Crasher for replying to my post.

I am unaware that there has been any work of that nature carried out. But could the collision have caused the damage. Maybe fractured it and over time the mounts have failed causing the engine to fall through, do you think?

I have no idea, the insurance have now come back with 'the flywheel coming out of allignment could have caused it, - wear and tear. My son says No, it would've been very noticable long before any thing that drastic was to happen. He also said something about - it being common on Dual something or other, which my car doesn't have anyway.

Sorry that this post is so waffley, I have no idea what any of it means ...lol

Thanks again

He means dual mass flywheel and yes your car does have one.

I have seen the engine mounting collapse of the Golf 5 for no reason on cars that have not been touched, in my opinion it is a design fault.

The name, humm, well I will leave you to guess that one…

It is not in posts I have come across this but in my job as a VAG specialist, I have seen a couple of Golf 5s where the engine has collapsed into the right hand inner wing.

Thankyou Crasher
I will keep hold of these posts, will they hold any weight do you think?
Is there any way I can get hold of the design fault information as mentioned?

Thanks

Don't feel obliged, I do this for the love of the job. The donate box is in the top left of the screen under user control panel.

Thanks Chrasher, don't worry I don't feel obligated. I think that we should give back once in a while!

Do you know of any other forums that deal with Golf or these kind of issues? Is there a digruntled ccar owner forum out there, where I could maybe find out if there are other Golf 5 owners who have experienced the same problem that I have? Thanks

Hi Crasher
Just an update: Insurance not playing ball, to be expected.

Volkswagon Maindealer: Are going to try to get an Engineer up to inspect the car, they are not happy with it and feel they should support us! WOW!

Also I have donated, but its not showing, does it take a while, used my debit card to do it?

Thanks
