hi i hope someone out there knows a bit about electric windows on a 97 1.4cl polo ! i have had the car now for three years and it was bought from a vw garage, within two weeks the passenger window motor failed so back i went to the garage who replaced the motor as the car had a years warranty, then a week later the drivers door motor packed up so once again vw replaced the motor and everything was fine for 12 months then the passenger door motor began to stick until i had the battery replaced and this seemed to do the trick for 9 months, and guess what its sticking again ! the only way to rectify it for a couple of days is to hold the switch down while a slam the door and hey presto its ok again for a few days.
if anybody has any ideas how to cure this i would be very grateful
As mentioned in another post, please check your window door wires by pulling back the grommet and checking the wires. If the windows are sometimes working and then not, perhaps these have broken and are rubbing together so it sometimes works and sometimes does not.
Its the cheapest place to start your investigations anyhow.
thanks for the advice if i remember correctly the first time vw replaced the motor they did mention something about a faulty solder on the motor but surely they would have had a concern to have had this rectified as the car is 1997 the motors they fitted three years ago should have been improved on but i have yet to check the door pillar wiring,
Posting in this old 'un because I have exactly the same problem. '97 Polo
My electric windows have failed to operate. Last night I thought I'd try the 'door slam' technique. Now I have a window that is third way down and won't go anywhere.
A new mechanism will be needed. Send me your chassis number by personal message and I will get you the part number and alternative source information. Which side is it?
The mechanism is 6N3 837 461 B (left) and 6N3 837 462 D (right) and the motor is 6N3 998 801 B (left) and 6N3 998 802 B (right). The mechanism is £70.27 and the motor is £159.35, both including VAT.
I gulped. The wife (it's her car) phoned a breakers and still gulped!
I ended up removing four screws that I thought held the motor on but the case just came off. I removed the whole mechanism from the door so I could take off the worm wheel drive and re assemble the motor and then the rest of the mechanism.
I cleaned out all the motor housing, checked the brushes, checked continuity on the windings and scraped out between the poles, put everything back as clean a whistle, and sprayed some silicon grease over the runners... and it works a treat. Brushes won't last too much longer though - getting a bit short.
