98 Passat Weird Fan noise on startup

Hi,
My 98 Passat 1.8 has a strange friction type noise coming from the cooling fan upon startup of engine. This lasts for approx 1-2 minutes, and then once all warm and running dissapears. It can occasionaly come back during driving but generally is fine after that.

I wonder if there is some form of lubricant that I could try to put on this to see if it remedys the sound. It really does sound like it need some lube, that type of sound anyhow.

Has anyone else come across this problem or would know what to do to fix it. All else around that area seems to be fine. Car done 97,000 now.

Thanks,

Hey Crasher,
This would be grand if you could keep in touch if you find out anything.
Might just be a wearing out fan huh if both of the same cars are doing it? Maybe some sort of lube on it may assist?
Just my thought on it, as it seems a bit of work to get to it otherwise.

Look forward to any of your thoughts on this.

Hi Crasher,
Not meaning to bug you any, but just a check up to see if you have had the time to look at your fan noise at all?

Strange thing with mine is that it is worse when the car is cold, then seems to mellow out once warm. I am fairly sure it is coming from the fan
