Sharan TDi water leak.

Hi, just bought a mega high miles (but priced accordingly!) VW Sharan 1.9TDi, `99 `T` reg.
The previous owner told me it was losing a small amount of water once a week or so and tonight the water light (part of the temp guage) has started flashing.
He suggested it was leaking water rather than using it and it seems from outside (without looking under the bonnet) that it`s as he says and coming from somewher around the near side of the engine bay. He thought it was somewhere near a radiator hose.
I realise that the best way for me to check was to pop the bonnet after it`s nice and hot and try and see for myself but I just wondered if it was a common fault on the Sharan or the TDi engine?
Any help very gratefully received, thanks in advance.

I`ll take that as a hint it could be the rad then?
I drove it back at about 80mph when I bought it (about twenty ish miles away) and it didn`t overheat and the light didn`t come on. had a day or tow of running it round as well with nothing noticeable but today, whilst mileage was low, it did have a bit of use and some slow-ish running.
It would appear it`s either leaking very slowly (as last owner suggested) or losing most of it when it`s quite warm.
I`ll try and look over the next few days and if it is rad would you suggest rad weld is worth the effort for a short-medium term fix?
I`d guess that a new or recon rad is going to be mega bucks?
There are other issues with the car, steering pulls to the left a little, air con doesn`t work (leaks like a sieve apparantly) and besides some silly bits of broken trim it has Fraud alloys on it.
All of these, including air-con, I can live with for now but I don`t want it to dump all it`s water suddenly one day!
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Perhaps the A/C condenser got punctured at the same time as the rad as it is in front of the rad, possibly a front end knock? Don't use any form of leak sealant unless you want to fit a new head, it clogs up the water galleys. New rads aren’t daft money from companies like GSF.
