Hi all,

I've a mk3 golf - 1.4, L reg (ABD engine code). some time ago it started overheating and as i was driving the engine oil indicator started flashing and beeping. I opened the bonnet and all the water was boiling out of the palstic expansion tank. there was nothing wrong with the oil as I checked it the day after while cold and it was the right level and colour. I've drained the coolant, renewed it and the problem seemed to have disappeared until today when the water boiled out again. I have the manual, but according to it the source for that problem could be the thermostat, the radiator, the coolant pump, the hoses or even the cap on the top of the expansion tank. I am really keen to sort it myself with a bit of advice, than giving it to some dodgy mechanic, who may change all the above parts and charge me a fortune. If someone can help me, will be very grateful!

If the oil beeper went off, you got it so hot it lost oil pressure and that is not good. The problem could be as simple as a displaced "O" ring in the coolant expansion cap (flip it over and check the "O" ring), to a blown head gasket, a failed thermostat or top cover pin reaction point for the thermostat, a faulty water pump, a blocked radiator, blocked radiator bleed hose, faulty coolant temp sender not turning the cooling fan on or more. The most common fault we get is a cap "O" ring and then thermostat or cover.
