View Full Version : Could faulty Lambda sensor cause slight misfire/hesitation?

My son has recently purchased a 2001 Polo 1.0E It is running fine except for a slight hesitation/misfire under load (just occasionally, not persistently). Diagnostics from our local garage show fault codes 16514 (Lambda - faulty signal), 17535 (mixture too rich) and 16712 (knock sensor signal too high).

I'm wondering if replacing the Lambda sensor is likely to cure the misfire/hesitation?

My son is a student and running the car on a shoestring so doesn't want to spend 60 - 80 on a new Lambda sensor if there is no perceived benefit (although I appreciate it may be required come MOT time, but that's a while away yet...!). However if a new Lambda sensor is likely to cure the misfire/hesitation then I reckon its money well spent.

Would be interested in the views of others..... :)

Dont quote me on this... but when I had my escort... if the sensors where unplugges it use to pop and spit flames for fun...

Me and house mate found it funny annoying ppl..

Anyway... iv heard alot of people say that a sensor can curse this problem but I have not had it on my polo so couldnt say for sure... try unplugging it and see if there is a change or not?

If there is not, get to a local scrappie and pick on up cheap?

Yes a fault lambda sensor will cause a misfire the ecu tells what fuel to be injected depending on the waste oxygen content in the exhaust.

VAG Error Code: 16514
EOBD II Error Code: P0130

Fault Location:
Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor (O2S) 1, Bank 1 - Circuit Malfunction

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
High fuel consumption.
Excessive smoke from exhaust.

Wiring/Connector(s).
Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor (O2S).
Inappropriate fuel pressure.
Faulty fuel injectors.
Intake air leaks may be faulty.
Exhaust gas leaks.
Engine Control Module (ECM).

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).

Tech Notes:
Replacing the Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor (O2S) Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem.

When is the code detected?:
The response of the voltage signal from the sensor takes more than the specified time.

Description:
The front heated oxygen sensor (or Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor (O2S) O2 Sensor 1) is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 1 signal is sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

EOBD II Error Code: P1127

Fault Location:
Long Term Fuel Trim, Entire Speed/Load Range, Bank 1 - System too Rich

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

Excessive fuel in engine oil.
Fuel pressure.
Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve (N80).
Injector(s).
Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (G39).


VAG Error Code: 16712
EOBD II Error Code: P0328

Fault Location:
Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61), Bank 1 - High Input/Short Circuit to Positive

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Irregular rpm.
Drivability problems.
Loss of power.
Engine damage.

Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) short to positive.
Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) open circuit.
Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) Improperly torqued.
Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) faulty.
Engine Control Module (ECM).

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).
Torque Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) to specifications.
Check Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61) and Knock Control.

Special Notes:
This feature search for unusual (spontaneous) combustion. The sensor detects unusual vibrations and based on that it generates a voltage. Is this voltage outside a certain limit a Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will be set.

Tech Notes:
The P0328 code means that the Knock Sensor is not working properly. Problems with the knock sensor will not cause an engine performance problems. Replacing the knock sensor usually takes care of the problem.

When is the code detected?:
An excessively high voltage from the sensor is sent to Electronic Control Module (ECM).

Description:
The knock sensor is attached to the cylinder block. It senses engine knocking using a piezoelectric element. A knocking vibration from the cylinder block is sensed as vibrational pressure. This pressure is converted into a voltage signal and sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM).
