Hi all. New to the Forum, just wondering if you can help a girl. I have a Polo 1.4 year is 2001 and my handbrake goes about 10 clicks. Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to tighten it? My friend had a look but couldn't remove the cover to see if he could do it there or if it has to go up on Axel Stands and do it that way? Thanks in advance.

There is some adjustment at the lever but most is done at the rear, either drums or discs
Check the brake pads/shoes are ok as if worn these can affect the handbrake

If they are OK then adjust at the rear first

There are manuals online or good ol haynes if you want some help

It is fairly straight forward but you will need some knowledge or help

Thanks for that. I looked online a couldn't find much. My friend checked the Pads and that, he said they were near enough all new. Looks like a Haynes Manual for me then. Just got to get the Airbag light gone now o.O

You should not adjust the cables, this will cause problems later when fitting new shoes, the problem will be the rear drum automatic adjusters need pulling down.

Make the handbrake too tight on a 6N and you can easily rip the bracket away from the floor, in fact that may be your issue, or the front nut has come lose. Check the base of the handbrake that is welded to the floor does not lift up when you pull the lever up.
