Engine dying on ignition

I have a 1995 1.0 Polo L.

My engine on my car keeps dying right after I switch the ignition on. It fires, and then dies. It doesn't die if I give it a lot of revs.

Other than this, the car appears to be in full working order. Can anyone help me and explain what's going on?

I had terrible problems with this too. The garage said it was the head gasket and they fitted a new one this cured it a little but it was still there to an extent. Eventually found out the temp coolant sensor was faulty and was sending wrong signals to the injectors and this was causing misfiring and the engine to cut out when starting.
