    Coil Springs

    Hi,

My 2006 Passat Saloon 2.0 TDi SEL. Mileage :49,015
I had to have rear coil spring fitted back in January 2015, now a front coil spring as snapped.
I have had the car from 6 months, with 4000 miles. Why are the springs snapping?
What is the scheduled labour time for replacing the front springs?

    Regards

I have just this afternoon fitted two rear coil springs on a 2007 A4, I have two fronts to do on a 2005 Polo on Thursday, we did four pairs last week....spring is in the air.

Springs snap because they are weakened by corrosion. This affects the high tensile steel like a diamond cut to glass and the spring snaps. It is something that afflicts all cars that use steel coil springs which is why VAG are investigating the use of fibreglass springs.

This is a spring on a Touran from a few years back now but at the time it was only just three years old. If you look closely you can see next to the break there is a patch of rust. This system is virtually identical to the one on your Passat. As you can see it very nearly ripped the tyre open (the gap was 8-mm) and when it failed it was at speed on an A road, 5 up, husband, wife and three sprogs.... does not warrant thinking about too much...

    Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

I had a well cared for 2006 passat with 48000 miles. In the space of 6 months all four springs snapped.
I tried complaining to VW .
They agreed to pay for one of the four.!
The car was only five years old at the time.
