    MK7 R-line Rattling noise - Boot Window

    65 plate, Golf R-Line BMT

Rattling noise which sounds like its coming from the boot window

When travelling over an uneven surface I hear a quiet but sometimes continuous rattling noise, when going over a speed bump the noise gets louder however sometimes its OK for several days

I've tried removing the parcel shelf and those two plastic inserts each side, the spare wheel and jack are secured firmly so I'm sure its not that

Any reason not to think its the boot window?

Yes there is - every chance it’s the fairly well known rear shock absorber rattle on the Golf 7 models with fully independent rear suspension. Sounds like a tapping noise over fairly small undulations? Like a rear door panel or lock is loose? I had my first Golf replaced due to this the same model with DCC variable damping didn’t show this. My current R line does but I just got used to it as the rest of the car is a peach. Gave up bothering VW as I’m not getting any younger. As yours is a 2016 model it’s still warranted so take it to a dealer and be prepared to diagnose the faults for them as they usually play hard to get! Interested to see how you get on as I may follow your footsteps if you get a fix!

I don’t know what VW have done to the dampers on the MQB platform but it seems like every MQB car we get in has a leaking damper, two Golf 7’s last week, nearside front on one and offside rear on the other.

On Tuesday a friend who is a general mechanic, brought me in a 7 to look at with a persistent seemingly false bulb warning message, no codes and after going through the dash menu six times, it cleared! Anyway, I was telling him how every one I get in has a leaking dampers and he said this ones just failed its first MOT on the NSF damper streaming oil down the strut leg.
