Questions for VW Sat Nav users

Currently use a standalone Tomtom Sat Nav.
When we change cars and assuming it will be another SV
looking to go for an SE-L which includes a Sat Nav.
We genenerally keep cars for around 5 years.

So questions some of which would not ask Dealer about.
Ours always gives the impression they are just guessing.

    1) Is the VW version user friendly and simple to use?
    2) How often are maps updated and are they free or the costs involved?
If not can you update without going to Dealer (say online) and avoid
paying a silly price by self installing. If so how?
    3) Does it support full 7 digit post code entry?
    4) Can you set a destination and insert a VIA one inbetween?
    5) Does it support POI'S (Points of Interest, petrol stations etc....?)
    6) Can you store favourite destinations.
    7) How good is the route planning? (TomTom's can give you tortuous cross country
routes when a simple direct route would make more sense).
    Speed cameras supported?
    9) SD card, CD or Hard Disk based?

Thanks in advance as will help make up mind which way to go.
Sorry for unintended smiley can't see how to delete it!!!

IMO - Chris will correct me as necessary.
    1. Yes
    2. Free but online, a dealer may charge.
    3. Yes
    4. Never used this, only ever used it on my wide TomTom.
    5. Yes
    6. Yes
    7. There have been incidents......... However wide Tom occasionally had his moments
    8. No speed cameras. (There is probably an option to add in) Wide Tom did but only static as you know and (over here) hand held are most popular.
    9. SD card

    10. Excellent, neat and recommended piece of kit. One of the first things I put on order and I am glad I did. However if the new ones supported the 7" version I would definitely have the one Crasher recommended a few days ago

    1) Is the VW version user friendly and simple to use?
I find it very easy to use, with clear mapping. (Better in fact than my son's Discovery's satnav)

    2) How often are maps updated and are they free or the costs involved?
If not can you update without going to Dealer (say online) and avoid
paying a silly price by self installing. If so how?

There are free updates to the maps, data and software every 6 months or so which you can download yourself from the VW website onto the original SD card. Updates are promised for the life of the satnav system (ie as long as it is being installed in new cars) plus a few more years. VW provide a software package to do the job for you, or you can simply locate the zipped file and extract it yourself onto the SD card.

If you don't fancy the job you can also ask your dealer to do it for you, at a price!

    3) Does it
support full 7 digit post code entry?
    Yes.

    4) Can you set a destination and insert a VIA one inbetween?

    Yes.

    5) Does it support POI'S (Points of Interest, petrol stations etc....?)

Yes, but only the ones VW provide. They are pretty comprehensive though and updated every 6 months.

    6) Can you store favourite destinations.

Yes, as well as last destinations, which will let you add a limited number of your own POIs.

    7) How good is the route planning? (TomTom's can give you tortuous cross country

routes when a simple direct route would make more sense).
Seems pretty good to me, although there are occasional hiccups when the map software gets confused and wants you to leave a dual carriageway, and then rejoin it again. If you have it set to use the shortest route it can take you down farm tracks, and if you let it try to divert you around traffic jams it can be too enthusiastic. But you have a choice of Fastest, Shortest or Most Economic routes to choose, and taken as advice rather than orders it works well.

    Speed cameras supported?
    No.

    9)
SD card, CD or Hard Disk based?
The basic one uses an SD card, the expensive one uses a hard disk (which you update via an SD card).

PS: What's the SE L trim? The current price list shows S, SE, SE Nav, Match and GT - and I suspect the Match has replaced the SE and SE Nav for new factory orders

I've looked at these myself recently and am annoyed that I can only add the matrix LED headlights by buying a GT, which is a lot more expensive even when you choose the 1.5 TSI 130 instead of the 1.5 TSI 150! So I'm contemplating going for a Tiguan next time round - but the order books don't reopen until next Feb with deliveries expected in the summer - by which time VW will be producing cars to the unknown MY20 spec instead of the current MY19 specs!
