Flashing glow plug warning light....what should I do?

    Hi all,

After an extended break of 6 years and the ownership of 2 BMWs (please don't judge me!), I'm back.

I picked up a 2011 Golf GT 2.0 TDi 140PS yesterday morning. Full service history, had the emissions recall done, and covered 28,000 miles. Yesterday evening, the flashing glow plug warning light comes up on the dash towards the end of a short journey. Drove it home 3hrs later and no sign of it. I know it can mean a whole myriad of things, and I need to get it hooked up to the diagnostics to get the fault codes read, but this was purchased from a trade seller (small one man band type outfit), and I'm wondering if I just take it straight back to him to fix?!

He had it since mid-November so it's hardly done any miles over the last 2 months - could this have anything to do with it? Beginning to scare myself with all the possible problems it could be from reading plenty of other posts

    Would appreciate any thoughts.
    Thanks.

It could be anything from the usual faulty EGR unit, a leaking turbo actuator or just a sensor failure.

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

It will cost you a few pounds but I suggest you get it diagnosed at a VW dealer or specialist and INSIST on a printed code scan, from that we can advise you and you can go back armed and ready to deflect any male Bovine excrement that may come your way...

Thanks Crasher. So by way of an update, it was diagnosed recently as a faulty EGR valve and thus that and the turbo return gaskets need replacing. Surprise surprise, the Warranty Assist "Gold" level cover excludes EGR valve replacement and subsequently any other work required as a result of the faulty EGR valve.

Roughly, what should I expect to pay to have this work done? The garage that diagnosed it quoted me 812 (EGR valve, turbo return gaskets and coolant - all in).

    Thanks.
