    Ignition Coil Fault

    Hi Guy's, just joined,

    I have a 2007 Fox 1.2 3 cylinder.

Problem is, if the engine sit's on tickover for a minute or so, the Engine Management Light comes on flashing.
Car goes into safe mode and won't accelerate above 2,000 revs.
Switch ignition off and back on, seems to resolve it, until it is ticking over for a minute or so again.

    Showing a Generic Code P0303 ( Misfire on Cyl 3 )
    Changed plugs.
Replaced Ignition Coil on CYL 3.
    Cleared codes.
Same problem occurred after a few minutes.

Does anyone know what could cause this before the Ignition Coil.
( eg: The wiring harness, ignition module etc,. )

And as a Newbie thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum.

Its nice to see you made an intro on your own.

That isn't a generic error code.

That's a very common error code which you can search the forum for as its a bit late.

Do a compression test, or move injector 3 to another cylinder and see if the misfire moves with it.
I'm afraid exhaust valve problems are common on these engines, hence the suggestion of a compression test.

A very simple test for this is to clear the codes with the engine running, if it goes back to 3 cylinders for a while then it's off with its head.

Hi Crasher, I think you may be right, it's almost exactly what happened.
Will do a compression test and go from there.
Thank you for your reply and expertise.

The ECU has very accurate engine position and speed sensing so in conjunction with it seeing raised emissions via the two lambda sensors, it can tell which cylinder is the problem. EU4 rules state that the injector of the offending cylinder must be shut off to protect the catalyst. Quite often with this fault, people replace the injector but if the coil or injector were the fault, near normal running would be resumed for a time when the fault code is cleared, I find it almost pointless doing a compression check but we have to so we can prove to the customer there is a low compression. We prefer to fit full genuine heads as the cost difference to rebuilding it professionally is minimal but most we diagnose get traded or scrapped.
