    Smelly exhaust?

Hi all. I bought a 2009 Passat Highline Estate 2.0 TDI a few days ago. I have noticed that there is a diesel exhaust smell, very prominent, after driving it a few miles. I haven't had it long enough to do any real research into this issue and just wondered if anyone knew of this problem and what causes it please?

The car is a 59 reg with 170K miles on the clock and a very full VW service history.
    TIA

Smelly exhaust from the outside or can you smell it in the inside?

If inside check when the pollen filter was last changed. You can replace that as its easy and OEM filters are cheap enough.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

To scan for the DPF soot content.

The smell is definitely much worse inside the cabin, outside not so noticeable. I will ask my local garage to scan the car and see what comes back and post the results.
    Thanks all

Thinking about it, there is no need. Someone has removed the DPF. When it is cold, Stick your finger up the tailpipe.

I sent a private message anyway, thanks. I have just taken a couple of pics showing my nice clean exhaust pipe and also a tissue that I shoved up the pipes to test for black gunk.
    Thanks again

It is an all in one unit, quote from the book of words "Exhaust pipe with catalyst and particulate filter"

From the look of it there is nothing wrong with the DPF, it has probaly had action 23R7 carried out which can make them stink, check in the service book if 23R7 is listed.
