Generic scan tools only pick up OBDII codes, there are dozens of codes that will not cause the engine MIL to come on.

It would be great if you could update the thread with fault codes and/or when you work out what the problem is and fix it.

Yep will do. Do you anyone based in Bromley, SE London/Kent with a Vag-Com scanner who can visit ? Is there a search facility for that on this forum Pete ?

When you do get it on VCDS, don’t be disappointed by no codes, that can actually help locate the fault as you know it is either the crank speed sensor which you can check in measuring blocks, or it is a system outside of the ECU’s diagnostic abilities, e.g. fuel supply pressure.

Okay, im optomistic about that. What would cause the fuel supply pressure to drop ? Im assuming its the pump, when i switch ignition I can hear a clunk near the fuel tank so that's ok probably. Could it simply be a blocked fuel filter ? Im gonna change that tomorrow.

Another question while im on a roll.

If I disconnect the fuel line to the engine fuel rail (think that's what its called), and then switch ignition then should fuel come out ? If so that tells me theres a fuel supply to the fuel rail at least. Thing is thou, if I do this will it create an air pocket in the line when I reconnect???

    Anyone.

We do have VAG-COM/VCDS User Locations but very few members add their details.

Ive found someone to take it away tomorrow who have Vagcom at their garages so they should find whats up. Just to mention, earlier today I hooked up a temp fuel supply to the injector in and return pipes, and linked out the spigots at top of fuel filter where I removed them from. Unfortunately it still did not start; the fuel from the bottle did not even get drawn up the (clear) pipe to the injectors while cranking. Not sure if this indicates anything else that may be wrong or why this didn't happen; but it didn't so im out of ideas now. Have to bite the bullet and get it towed

Just to update; car been at garage, they have fixed it now. They ran a scan and issue was with 1 intermittent injector. They said if just 1 injector goes up the wall its really difficult to start from cold, although not so difficult from warm. Initially without inspection they suspected a fuel pump issue but this was ruled out. I would have thought the loom would be suspected before the injector cause that would give the same symptoms wouldn't it; but anyways they know better than me. Its running sweet now, thanks for responses.
