That is the starter motor and on top, the start solenoid but they are classed as one part in most cases.

    Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

For what it's worth, it's not unheard of for the single thinner solenoid energising wire (with detachable connector, hiding under that weird-shaped metal 'arm') to break at the cable entry area of the connector, causing a 'deathly silence' non-start situation. It can even break or just corrode badly within cracked insulation, so not appear broken at a quick glance. A gentle 'tug test' will reveal such a situation.

If this is your scenario, mend that wire and all will be well again. Many people sadly replace the starter motor instead, needlessly.

Hi thanks a lot for your replies

Just trying to locate all the components. My manual seems to have lots of text but few images, and seems there are so many engine variations I'm having trouble finding these answers through google etc.

How about this part below? This is on the left hand side of the engine at the top (black disc thing) and has a pipe going in and out.

Does anyone know if this car has an EGR valve? I can't see where this is located, manual says somewhere to the left of engine but I don't know what it looks like

I'm not sure if the car is a 12v or 6v model (don't know how to tell the difference?)

The V5 says it is engine number AWY161114

    Thanks again for any help!

AWY is your engine code. This is a 6-valve engine, and they do not have an EGR valve.
