They haven't mentioned a misfire (my sister or the car owner, my nephew). Apparently its running normally.

Seem to be a few TDIs on YT that have the light come on when the air shut off valve gets clogged a bit.

Sorry I was being dumb, I only saw 1.2 and did not see it was Fuel of the Devil. Cars built before 5th July 2010 have had a lot of problems with their inlet manifold and later cars are not much better BUT by far the EGR valve unit is the most common problem.

If the EGR needs a clean out, does the arrow point at the right part to clean ?

Cleaning it is a frustrating waste of time as it will not help and considering it takes a day to change WHEN you have a lift and have done one before, it gets very annoying having to do it again, so if you see EGR faults, fit a new genuine unit bought from a VW dealer. Don’t be tempted by cheap aftermarket units, they are rubbish and the warranty does not cover labour or last 2 years as the dealer one does. Your code reader will not allow you to carry out EGR diagnostics or output function tests.

I only want the code reader to confirm any pending faults and give me the code numbers.

Noted about a genuine EGR if that's the bother - thanks!

The code reader has flagged up code P0405 and P0405 P.

According to the code reader manual: EGR Flow Sensor A Circuit Low Output

Managed to get the warning light extinguished!

Took the EGR motor off, which I presume operates the valve.
Operated the geared lever, that the motor operates, against it spring a few times and seemed smooth enough.

Got all reassembled then started the engines. The light stayed on a while then extinguished. Presumably fault cleared.

If the light stays out, do I use the reader to clear the logged codes?
