In VWs defence, they didn't tell me anything other than the fact that the CR pump listed for the car is an engine mounted, belt driven unit.

I made the assumption that its mechanical rather than electrical operation and that VCDS would not be needed.

If its a case of VCDS, then so be it, I'll give the auto sparky the job. Its a one off job, 30+vat vs 225 for VCDS

What's the manual way of operating the engine bay pump?

I got photos of the pump and filter at last. So does the CR pump need bleeding via vcds on the car?

Yours has two pumps, one in the fuel tank and one engine driven. You run the in tank pump for a few minutes to bleed the system. One I serviced on Monday had three pumps, in tank, high pressure electric and engine driven. After running the HP electric in basic settings it runs for a few minutes and then times out, starting with a squalling showing air in the fuel which fades. Then you run the in tank in output tests where it pulses and then the HP one again and again it had air in it. You only have the lift pump so it must be run for a protracted period to bleed the system. Remember a failed CR pump is around 3k worth of work and the sparky will just walk away and what can you do?

So with mine, if I fill the new filter prior to fitting then ign on to run the tank pump for priming, the engine is good to go?

It will take a LOT of cycling of the switch. Each time you turn on it primes for about 1 second and VW state

"The fuel pump must run for approx. 3 minutes to ensure that the high-pressure fuel pump is filled with a sufficient amount of fuel"

so that is around 120 cycles of the ignition switch... I pity your wrist!
