Temperature gauge on high when stopped then goes back to normal when driving!

Hi, I recently changed the fuel pump in my 2002 Mk3.5 Golf Cabriolet and about 20miles later when idling the temperature warning light started flashing and the temp gauge goes all the way up. The check engine light has also come on. When I start driving again the light and gauge go back to normal. I have changed the temp sensor and nothing changed. Please any advice would be great!

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

Your car spec says 0, only what I've added from this post, minus engine size/type.

Recheck what you have done before, if it worked ok before.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

Hello, Thank you for the first post info, I have filled in the details for my car. It’s a 1.9L petrol. Sorry, I’m not great at internet stuff but now I know that this site is here I will definitely be visiting again. I will repost in introductions as well. I did a scan and the engine code is P0501. All the fault codes and problems from the fuel pump are fine now and I had a mechanic friend check that it was done properly. We are both a bit lost now.
    Thanks

Must be a 2l petrol. Does the cooling fan come on when it overheats?

The don't make a Golf Cabriolet 1.9 petrol they are all TDI. You need to get your car spec right when you ask about problems!!!

That's odd as you would expect the fans action to mimic road draught cooling. Do you know if the cooling fan has been replaced and that the connector into it looks original? I think the next thing I would do is chnage the complete water pump assembly and thermostat, bit of a pain though as you have to take the PS system off.
