    Engine knock?

Hi guys, I seem to have a problem with my 2007 Passat B6 1.9 TDI. It starts first flick and idles at 800rpm smoothly but I can hear the pom pom pom coming from the airfilter or turbo hoses. I did have this issue before but replaced the injectors and it seemed ok for a while. If I touch the throttle it sounds like big ends gone but usually clears after a minute or two. Today it doesn't want to clear and I'm reluctant to drive it.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

That isn't easy to diagnose on the web as we can't hear this pom pom pom. Do you have a video?

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

Cam lifter/follower failure, common 8v PD TDI issue, when you rev them up it sounds like the engine is about to throw a rod.

Thank you both. No codes show up on reader but I will endeavour to load a video. I like the cam follower idea. I thought there may be a slight oil blockage when cold and I believe the cam adjustment is automatic by hydraulic pressure (is that right?) I, obviously, have had the camshafts off to change the injectors. Will look into it further tomorrow cuz I have to go and get my new specs today and will be able to see more.
    Many many thanks

No you have had the injector arms off, yes the cam clearances are hydraulic but the fault in the picture is almost impossible to see with the cam in, the only clue is damage to the peak of the cam lobe and sharp edges. If you fit a new cam you must fit new injector rockers (genuine only, huge cost) or you stand a very high change of injector lobe failure which is not covered under anyone's cam warranty unless you can prove the rockers were changed. Beware of chilled cast iron cams, buy only billet steel versions.

Just took the rocker cover off and had a look but I can see the camshaft needs to be removed so out of my league. I have recorded to my phone now I need to learn how to upload to here.

Yes the thud thud thud and the revved up death rattle are classic hydraulic lifter failure. The first time I heard it around 2002 I thought it was con rod failure.

Many thanks for continued advice. I have nothing to lose so maybe I'll bite the bullet and have a go. Do I need any special tools? I do have a pdf of instructions, which shows special tools and fuel extractor but can this be done without? I suppose it boils down to do I drive to breakers or have a go and, if fail, tow it there.
