Just for information - my 7.5 does not have a switch/wheel for adjusting headlamp height. The height can only be adjusted in the settings/lights section of the infotainment system. BTW the car has standard halogen headlights and does not have self levelling headlights as required on cars with xenon or led units.
Presumably this is yet another instance of VW cost cutting but, to be fair, how often do most drivers change the headlamp height settings?

Originally the manual beam setting was introduced to enable drivers to adjust headlamps to suit if for instance they were towing a caravan etc.
Otherwise used when the boot was full of luggage and the back seats full of people with their Bull Mastiff.
Possibly not very often as you say but very handy if necessary.
Disappointed to hear that this feature has been discontinued.

Strictly speaking the facility is still there but very awkward to get at. My wife has a similar age (about 1 year) Golf tdi. Estate; this still has the height adjusting switch. Very strange.

As I feel my Philips bulbs are a touch bright, around town I drive with mine would right down and up for out of town driving.

    Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

This would be very difficult and dangerous to do using the infotainment menus when driving my Golf.
Somewhat off the point - the dashboard light's intensity are similarly accessed only through the menu system and virtually impossible to alter safely on the move; IIRC the intensity switch was first removed on Mk.7 Golf's.

In case anybody is looking for a solution. The fault turned out not to be a faulty headlamp height motor/actuator. I bought a 2nd hand motor off eBay (20 pounds) - fitted the motor (which is a bit awkward) tried the wheel/ switch and still nothing. Stumped I took it to the dealer. They tried a new motor ( didn't work) then checked the wiring - all was ok. It turned out to be a short inside the headlamp unit. Fix was a new H/Lamp. Total cost including the time it took to diagnose = 392 Pounds (my pound sign is not working) Very expensive especially considering I have never had to use the switch as i don't ever carry heavy loads at night.
