Golf 6 Instrument Cluster Back Lighting Failure

    Hi All,

I am new to the forum. I have a Golf 6 that one by one the led's that provide back lighting on the instrument cluster seem to be failing on the speedometer side. I have had the cluster out assuming that I could just change the globes but they are LED's soldered to the main pc board. Anybody have any ideas with regards to the cause and or potential solution without a cluster replacement?
    Thanks in advance.

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

LED bulbs are a pain in the back side you have to replace the whole unit as they don't supply LED replacement bulbs. That is another stupid VAG thing when you can buy all other bulbs.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

Thanks Keith UK. I have done a scan - I have a scanner and no codes reported. What are your thoughts on retrofitting LED's that are wired separately. Will be difficult to make it super neat, but ultimately it will be hidden inside the cluster?

Send it to BBA Reman for repair. Remember if you upset the cluster it contains the immobiliser and you can't just plug in a new one and go.

I'm sure I've read somewhere you can buy similar led bulb diode from electrical shops and solder them on.

You can but I would entrust the job to someone used to working with sensitive electronics. All through my 40 years I have seen people dig themselves holes messing around inside instrument units. Damage the unit and trigger the immobiliser and it is then recovery to a main dealer for a new panel.

Thanks for all the input. I am going to scratch around a bit more before i make any decisions. I will have a closer look at the PC board to check the viability of replacing the LED's. Any ideas on sourcing the wiring diagrams for the cluster? Want to understand if the led's are solely powered through the dimmer switch or if there is some electronics in between...
