P0342 Camshaft position sender -G40-, Signal too low

The BFS is a bit of an odd one, the VW parts system even gets it wrong, the BFS uses this sensor design for the G40

Part number 06A 905 161 c and is available from dozens of aftermarket companies such as Bosch, Delphi, FAE, Febi, Hella, Marelli, Meyle, NGK, Valeo etc

The plug going into it is VW part number 1J0 973 723 and you may need new terminals but you can only buy these easily pre fitted to a repair wire, 000 979 021 EA for the recommended Gold plated versions and you would need two as they are double ended. If you need the little bungs I THINK these are 3B0 972 742 C. You can buy the plugs, terminals and seals from specialist suppliers such as Wurth but you may struggle where you are.

    Thanks Keithuk for the link.

Crasher, i bought the connector off ebay and i have asked one of my brothers to pop into the dealers to get the repair wire. I have used the VW repair wires in the past when i was putting a Digifiz in my g60, but many thanks for the part number for the gold plated ones.
The camshaft sensor i also got off ebay but bought 06b905163a as that looks the same as what is on the back of the head by the throttle body, where as the part number you listed appears to be for the sensor when it is mounted behind the cam pulley.

After checking the wiring diagrams and my wires on the sensor it would appear that the wire no:1 grey/red and wire no:3 yellow have been wrongly put in each others places.

I will update once the parts i have been purchasing get air freighted here and fitted etc.

Once again many thanks i really appreciate you taking the time to help out.

Your are quite right, I copied and pasted the wrong number off of ETKA, it lists both and does not differentiate, only in the workshop system does it say the BFS is different to the AVYD.
