    Error code reader

    Hi,

I have a Vgate Scan VS450 scan tool which I have used in the past on my 2003 T4 van. It doesn't seem to work on my 2010 Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDi Should it work?

The engine management light is on constantly in the Golf and I would like to be able to check what is wrong.

VS450 is a generic scanner it may have worked on your 2003 T4 van.

There is only one true VAG scanner VAG-COM\VCDS they aren't cheap but you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

I had great fortune by using the search term "VCDS scan" in eBay. What turned up was a chap who lived near me, had the use of VCDS and was an ex-rally driver and garage owner who knew how to use it.

After a couple of control valves were changed (for less than a VW dealer diagnostic session) by my local independent, the car now runs nicely.

The engine management light has now gone out. If I get a VAG-COM will it tell me why the light came on?

If there were codes stored and they have not been erased then yes, they will still be there.

If you scan with VAG-COM\VCDS that will list all error codes in the different systems. It will erase all error codes but you still need to cure the problem.

Depending where the error codes are you can use Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) or Advanced Measuring Value Blocks on components to see what values come back.

Sometimes you erase error codes and drive it around to see which ones come back.

Searching on ebay for VAG COM brings up a wide range of stuff, some of it obviously rubbish. How do I tell what is the real deal?

OK so I have read the codes and they are follows: 0012c7, 00146B, 00146F and 0023A0. I can't see these codes on any list of VW codes that I can find on the internet. What is going on?
