    broken header rail catch/latch

Hi, the open and close catch on our 2003 beetle refuses to open. I don't want to force push the button too hard as I can feel metal through it and don't want it to break through. Any suggestions pre-heatwave will be very much appreciated!
    Kind regards

This is the handle you turn to release the hood? These are very problematic and prone to failure and have been revised many times and there used to be a repair kit but this has been dropped in favour of a new design mechanism. There are two different colours and designs, one for electro hydraulic and another for manual operation.

Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

Hi, yes that's the one. It is the push button that seems to be the problem as opposed to the turn handle. It's an auto hood.
Any suggestions on a fix or even how now to get it open?
    Thanks

It was built 24th May 2003... The repair kit for the button was 43.54 but went obsolete from the main dealer network in August 2018, but you can get it from VW Classic in Germany for 71.45 Euro under part number 1YM 898 002 3PT. If you break the grip it is part number 1Y0 8971 765 3PT and costs 36.11 and still available from a VW dealer. The reason the kit was dropped was it doesn't always (well very rarely) work and the complete assembly was upgraded to a more reliable design just days after your car was built and subsequently this was again upgraded in 2018 to part number 1Y0 871 383 J Y20, which costs....... 897.46 from a VW dealer.

That's very helpful and detailed! Thank you! Looks like it's goona be exensive either way.
Sorry, one last question, have you seen any diagrams or schematics anywhere that show what the mechanism looks like. We've got the usual Haynes manual but no info on convertibles.

Sincere thanks for all your help, really appreciated. I drew a blank even online.

    Cheers

Hi crasher, as requested however don't feel that I'm chasing an immediate response, I'm sure you're very busy.

I believe I have found the repair kit that I need for approx. 50 but can't seem to find a diagram or instructions on how to repair. I've had another look at the car and it's all reasonably accessible. Reallystrange that I can't find anything online or in forum of someone having to do this before as it is a common issue.

Thanks again for all your assistance
