    Inaccurate petrol reading

    Hi guys,

I have a 08 plate Golf GT 1.4 TSI, recently bought. I have noticed that i can do say 5 miles and the estimated mileage remaining goes down by say 20. It can then fluctuate and will go back up by 10 or 5 miles, my needle does same. It will go down and then back up.

    Any ideas?

That is normal and nothing to worry about and nothing you can do about.

The range is calculated based on the fuel left in the tank and the current average mpg. With and average mpg figure of 60 my range on a full tank is around 800 miles, if the average is only 30 then the range drops to 400 for a full tank. Many times I have found that after driving 30 miles the range is now higher than when I started all because the average mpg has improved. As crasher says - perfectly normal...…..

My Octavia makes my laugh. The vast majority of time I am just doing work/home/work/home etc which is about 2 miles each way. Then if I fill up right to the brim it says I have about 325 miles but if I then drive straight up to Lancaster (about 200 miles) the gauge has barely moved and I still have 400 miles left! The difference I get between town and a 70mph long cruise is actually more mpg than I get in urban driving per gallon, 18 around town and 55 on a long run.

Mpg fluctuating is normal as it depends on driving style. However, the fuel needle shouldn't fluctuate much unless you are on an incline.
