    Growl on acceleration & clutch issues

    Hi all,

    My 2008 Golf mk5 estate (2.0 TDI, 115K on the clock) has a few issues and I'm trying to understand if they are all connected, or whether I potentially have 3 expensive problems on my hands. Issues as follows:

    1. I've suspected for a long time that my Dual Mass Flywheel is on its way out (juddering & slight whirring sound at idle, and can feel the revs through the clutch pedal). This always went away when in gear or with the clutch depressed and I (perhaps foolishly) have just continued to drive it like this (trying to avoid the expense of a replacement).

    2. In the last week, I've noticed an intermittent fairly loud 'growl' noise from the engine/trans in the 2,000-3,000RPM range, this only happens when under higher load (e.g. hard accelerating or going up a hill), and it goes away at higher revs.

    3. Yesterday, the clutch pedal lost about half of its travel, but returned after pumping the pedal with my foot, which I guess indicates air in the system. The clutch still works fine (no slippage).

    Could all of these problems be attributed to a DMF? (garage have quoted 1000 just for that!). My fear is that if I get that done, it might not solve items 2 & 3 on my list and I'll end up with even more expense in sorting these!

    It could be Dual Mass Flywheel there are plenty of video's on YouTube if you can search.

    The dropping pedal commonly indicates the concentric release bearing is failing due to a lack of fluid changing and this is inside the gearbox. Typically you should pay around 1K for a full four piece clutch kit from Sachs or LUK, fitted and done.

    Thanks both. Crasher, you mentioned a failure inside the gearbox... Do you mean that this would be additional work beyond replacing the DMF? I've had a quote for a new clutch/flywheel/release bearing from a local garage that sounds quite reasonable (680) but I'm not sure if you're saying I might have an additional problem inside my gearbox that could add further cost?

    Hi all, good news is I've had the clutch and flywheel replaced and all the above symptoms seem to be solved.

    However, I'm trying to understand a new problem that seems to have appeared straight after having this work done:

    Intermittently, when I start the engine, I get quite a violent/loud startup and sometimes it's the engine stalls immediately after. I've no idea if this can possibly be related to having the clutch/flywheel replaced or whether it is just a coincidence that this problem has appeared at the same time.

    Can anyone shed any light on this? Could it be something to do with the engagement of the starter with the new flywheel?

    Difficult to say without experiencing it but the price you seem to have paid is too cheap, what did they fit?

    It's a Sachs flywheel/clutch/release bearing that cost about 340 for the parts, I assumed they are a reputable brand? It was 5 1/2 hrs labour

    Sachs is more than reputable, it is the best money can buy. Their labour rate is cheaper than mine. Your signature says 1.9 but your initial post 2.0, could you private message me the reg number please.

    Thanks (the less I Google about the BXE engine the better!) .
    Do you think my erratic start could be attributed to the fact I know a past diagnostic gave codes relating to the glow plugs (I think 2 of them were failing). But I never noticed any problem whatsoever so I didn't get it sorted. Strange though that this problem has emerged immediately after my clutch/flywheel was done.
