B5.5 fuel filter change - engine will not start.

    Hi,
I have just changed the fuel filter on my 2003 Passat B5.5 1.9 TDI auto. The car started immediately after the filter change then died as the fuel in the system was used up. I have turned the key on and off many times and and tried to start the engine many times without success. I have disconnected the pipe on the fuel filter outlet and diesel gushes out when the ignition is turned on. The Haynes manual says the system doesn't need priming on this model. Any suggestions?

I have been cranking until the battery is flat (its a good battery). It still isn't starting. I get the impression that there is something wrong but don't know what.

This is a pain we get with every TDI after a fuel filter change but your symptom is common for early PD TDI 3B’s without an in tank lift pump or even worse, later cars with a failed lift pump which you only ever notice after a filter change or running out of fuel.

Thanks Guys. Charged the battery overnight and cranked it for a long time this morning. Eventually it burst into life.

Well we can only go by what has been posted. You need a good cranking speed so if you charged the battery and now it starts get the battery checked out.

I always fill the new filter with diesel first.
