Faulty VW Beetle airbag 2004 convert

I have an error code on my VW beetle convert 2004

01739 - Crash Sensor for Front Airbag; Pass. Side (G284)
    004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent

So told to purchase a sensor 6Q0909606H ( newer updated sensor )

Its only showing as the passengers side sensor G284 which has failed and not the G283 driver side

I understand the 6Q0909606H sensor is the replacement for an older sensor, but someone has now told me I need to replace both sides if my car has the older sensors

You can't have a new sensor and old sensor together on different sides ?? Is this correct ??

    Many Thanks

https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/ keep this in your favorites/bookmarks for reference. As it will save me checking ETKA.

    VAG Error Code: 01739

    Fault Location:
Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) - Electrical Fault in Circuit/Open Circuit/No or Incorrect Basic Setting/Adaptation/No Signal/Communication/Implausible Signal

    Possible Cause:
    Airbag Light is on.
    Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

    Wiring/Connector(s).
Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) is faulty.
Incorrect control module was installed, check part numbers.

    Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace Wiring/Connector(s) for Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284).
If connections are ok, change Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) with Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Drivers Side (G283). If the fault change also, you found a faulty sensor. Replace it.
If changing Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Drivers Side (G283) with Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) does not change the fault, then check wiring between Crash Sensor for Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) and Airbag Control Unit.
    Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).

    Special Notes:
When found in the North American Region (NAR) New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible models see if the R6/69H1 Safety Recall was completed. The Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) involves replacing both crash sensors (Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Passenger Side (G284) & Crash Sensor for Front Airbag: Drivers Side (G283) when the old/early production sensors are instated.
The common fault codes are 01739 and or 01738.

As taken from my new EOBD II Fault Codes Software
