VW Beetle 1.9 Tdi non starter

    Hi
I am having trouble with my wife’s VW Beetle 1.9 TDI. It has the AXR engine. The problem is that over the last year or so it has intermittently not started. I have had the crankshaft sensor changed a number of times, an replacement ECU and Injector seals fitted. Last week it was in the garage for the same problem and they changed the temperature sensor, crankshaft sensor, carried out the mod to the crankshaft sensor wiring and fitted a new battery. I picked the car up on Saturday and it was fine. On Monday I left the car at work and came back today and it will not start. It cranks over but I notice that the fuel gauge drops into the red but the Rev counter does not read a value. I am going to get the RAC to get it towed back to the garage but your thought would be helpful.
    Regards

It would be interesting to view the engine ECU measuring block rpm value as seen by the ECU and also separately by the instruments when it will not start, the fuel gauge dropping is something I have not seen but suggests a poor wiring connection.

    Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

    Hi Crasher
The RAC turned up this morning and plugged the car in and there was no rpm reading. I am not sure where he was reading it from but he said if the rpm did not show up whilst cranking then the crank sensor was not working. He has towed it to the garage that changed the sensor last week. I know the garage use VCDS so hopefully I show get some more info later.
Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted.

wife’s VW Beetle 1.9 TDI AXR you have quite a selection on models.

Manufacturer: VW, Date(s) Used: 07/2005-09/2010, Model: Beetle, Engine Code: AXR, 74Kw, 101PS, 1.9 Ltr, 4 Cyls, Remarks: Turbocharged Direct Injection Pumpe Düse (TDI-PD) Timing belt

As suggested: You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.
2010 Golf GTD (170) CBBB, 5 Door, Shadow Blue (P6/D5Q), Transmission Code: KXZ, Flat Tyre Indicator, Basic Protection Pack + VCDS.

The car was returned today. The auto electrician traced the problem back to the wiring to the ECU. There was 4 crimped connections in the wiring. These have all been remade using solder and heat shrink.
    Thanks for all your help.

I left the car over the weekend and tried to start the car today and it does not start. I have scanned it with VAGCOM tonight and there are no fault codes stored in the engine or instrument pages. Any suggestions would be helpful. Could it be fuel and what would need to be checked. Thanks.

I have checked the anti shudder valve and it is open and looking through the valve the EGR valve seems clear.
I operated the pump a few times with vag com but the car still refused to start.
The RAC come out today and checked the crankshaft sensor. This diagnostic showed no rpm. The lightly tapped the sensor whilst cranked it over and it started. It now starts on the button.
So my question is is it possible that the sensor can pick up partials and stop the sensor from working.
