    still struggling with this

Crasher can you see the video...why is the timing still from cold on the VCDS then starts jumping around ? this corresponds with the fault

timing has been set over and over again , tried another engine harness , relays and ecu yesterday

Ignore the timing display in measuring blocks, all that is doing is showing you the amount of timing compensation the ECU is applying to stabilise the idle and the ECU assumes the basic timing is at 5 degrees when doing this. Disconnecting the temp sender stops the idle stabilisation function and allows you to see the basic timing. You do this with the temp sender disconnected and the rpm between 2 and 2.5k and the figure should be between 3 and 7 degrees but 5 is the ideal. The 5 degree mark is the pointed one.

When the coolant sensor is unplugged, does it run well?

yes runs really nice with it off

its a genuine part that checks out on the multimeter , it also displays accurate temp on the vcds , brand new wires end to end with correct crimps

see here please...first part of the video with it off , note the idle is good on the timing light , then listen and watch it go wrong when connected , ive repeatedly tried redoing the timing and its always the same

does it sound like it could be a weak mixture ? seems to drive acceptably with no obvious faults , no bucking /jerking etc

Unplugging Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) is a quick fix for bad starting.

So how about a reality check on the coolant temperature sensor...

What do you have in the ECU's MVB 005.4? With the engine stone cold, the reading should be within a few degrees of the actual ambient temperature.

And how about that Coolant Temperature Sensor code in the Instrument Cluster? Does it come back after you clear it?

That engine shouldn't need glow plugs to start above 5*C. If you're in CA in August, you should be way above that. Have you checked the start of injection?

    right

    been messing some more

start from cold , sounds okay /acceptable , watch the marks with my timing light and theyre steady at 5degs or so ..runs like this say 4-5 mins then you hear a definite change and the timing marks have shot off

its repeatable , does this every time like its okay then something changes in the ecu and ruins it

got a strong feeling its timing related but as ive said ive checked and set the timing dozens of times now

Can you get hold of a Co meter? Is the pre cat test port still there?
