    First post

    Hello dear friends.
I have posted an introduction, but I suspect in the wrong place as I'm trying to do this on a phone whilst camping in the highlands.
Anyway, a slight recap is that my friend bought a 1972 type 2 Dormobile last Tuesday and dove it up from Essex to Scotland. As I will be heavily involved in the repairs and maintenance, I joined the forum to get some info and eventually pass on anything I can help with to others. It drove up fine and when I got stuck into it on Wednesday, I gave it a full service.
It's running sweet now and we set off for a weeks holiday in the highlands as 2 families.
There is a fault that I could do with advice on. While driving north, it became apparent that the engine cuts out when slowing down for junctions and lights. Its then a bit difficult to restart.
Like I said, we are away on holiday but I have my toolbox with me. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.
    Andy.

That has always afflicted the type 2 and could be any one of dozens of issues. Firstly, which year and what is the engine type? Do you know if it is original or modified? 38 years ago when I started working on them most had been seriously hacked about even then.

    Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

The chap my friend bought it from said it was a 1500cc We asked why it wasn't a 1600 and he said he didn't know as that was fitted when he bought it 11 years ago. I can only assume that it was a beetle engine that someone fitted. It runs well enough and pops along at 60mph without problem. I couldn't find any reference to a bay window ever being fitted with a 1500 as standard. Engine number starts with a B if that's any help.
