Fuel pump noise when ignition switched on

Im trying to diagnose a possible issue with a 2009 Caddy 2.0 SDI. Sometimes when the ignition is switched on (without cranking engine), I can hear a sort of weeeering sound from under the bonnet towards the passenger side that lasts for 3-4 seconds; Im assuming this is the fuel pump priming. However, more often than not, I dont hear this sound. Anyone know what is normal, should i hear this every time ignition is switched on/only when its cold/only when it needs priming ?

TDI version, the BTS... That will be the intake manifold flap, also known as the anti shudder valve. It should run but they are prone to failure.

Sorry, the BDK is the Golf version of the BST, they are almost identical and the manifold flap the same part number 038 128 063 J.

Just to note its not a clicking noise; it sounds like a healthy noise tbh. Its just im wanting to know if this noise should happen every time i switch ignition, cause sometimes it does but mostly it dont.

Yes it is a sort of buzz, click whirr, click, stop... You should here it each time the ignition is switched on and off.

As said the fuel pump should run for a couple of seconds when you turn the ignition on.

Thats it exactly, the thing is sometimes I hear this noise but most of the time not ! Its intermittent. Could a faulty intermittent relay be causing this ? and causing the van not to start on occasion ??

There is some confusion for engine code I added what his car spec said, now I've updated that.
