    Dashboard illumination lights

I've got a 1989 mk2 Polo C and there's a problem with the dashboard illumination lights, basically they don't turn on whilst the engine is on. if i turn the lights on without the key in the ignition its fine and they work but as soon as i turn the key they turn off. At first it only happened occasionally and a bit of percussive maintenance would sort it out, which made me think its probably a loose connection and now it just doesn't work. I've taken out the dash board to see if i can see and thing but theres nothing that looks damaged or looks like it could causing it to happen.

if anyone knows whats up with it it would be a great help. cheers.

The dash illumination is from the headlight switch resistor on the grey/blue, they do not (well SHOULD NOT) come on with the ignition, only sidelights.
