    That sounds like oil ring failure, it is not a huge job on that engine as it is quite simple compared to the 16v 1.6 which is a sketch.

    It's what I suspected all along. It's safe to say it's time to shift it on. She's enjoyed it and actually really loves it so it's Morethan likely it will be replaced with another.
    Out of interest why didn't the compression test show with low compression?

    Because the oil rings hardly contribute to compression, that is the first and second rings job, the oil scraper does just that.
