Error P2188 - Too rich at idle bank 1 (Losing the plot!)

    Hi All,

    I have a 2009 Golf 1.4 TSI petrol.

I have noticed about 2 months ago the engine light came on with the only error code being P2188 - Too rich at idle bank 1, and the car has been through various part changes to rectify the fault but nothing has fixed it so far, here's what's been undertaken:

    - New MAP sensor ( air mass flow)
    - New NGK spark plugs
    - New air filter
    - New oil and oil filter
    - New fuel filter and I've used Redline 3 in 1 fuel additive to clean the insides of the engine (cylinders + fuel injectors)
    - Throttle body cleaned
    - O2 sensor checked and is perfectly working

Still I have the same error code.

The issues I have noticed is on idle it runs rough and has somewhat of a knocking and jerking movement attached to it coming from the engine bay which leads to it misfiring occasionally, there is also a smell of fuel lingering around the car but is not distinct being from the front or the back of the engine. My fuel consumption is dropping heavily too. Does anyone know how to get rid of this P2188 code, it's driving me crazy and costing me a lot of money, not to mention I can't get my car remapped to stage 1 unless this is fixed :/

Thank you for all your help!

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

What was that error code scanned with a generic scanner?

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

    VAG Error Code: 008584/4106
    EOBD II Error Code: P2188

    Fault Location:
System too Rich at Idle, Bank 1 - No Signal/Communication

    Possible Cause:
    Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

    Fuel pressure.
    Injectors.
    Air intake restricted.

As taken from my new EOBD II Fault Codes Software

Apologies, I am new to the thread and didn't know the introductory rules; instead of going through trial and error I'm glad I found a forum dedicated to VW and will intend to use this going forward.

Thank you for your help - the initial error code was from a mechanics professional scanner tool and my breakdown recovery assistance truck scanner tool that both picked up the error code P2188 - Too rich at idle Bank

The engine light was illuminated but has suddenly disappeared, however, when I put my generic OBD2 in and connect with Torque Pro I can see the error code still being active.

With regards to the VAG-COM/VCDS where would I get this software and where's the best place to get a full diagnostic report using this software? Thank you very much

The software is free to download and install Current VCDS Release

Its the cost on the genuine cable that is expensive.

Don't think about buying a cheap Chinese cloned cable of fleabay that those are banned subject.

    Banned subjects

You do have VAG-COM/VCDS User Locations but very few members added there details.

You don't say where you live?

Ignore the bank 1 bit, it only has one bank; when it is a V engine it has bank 1 and 2. Is this a BLG/BMY or CAXA?

Thank you very much - I will look to donwload the software and seek a genuine cable as advised.

I live in the West Midlands (if anyone is around the region I don't mind travelling); thanks for the link I will look to seek users in the area that can possibly help!

Once I have obtained info from the VCDS I will post on here in aid of my issue, thanks!

Thank you - in response to the latter part, this is a CAXA from my knowledge. How would I confirm this information? Is there a way of doing so?
