2010 Golf Plus 1.6 TDI Cold Starting Problems

I have had a cold-starting problem with my 2010 Golf Plus 1.6TDI (105PS CAYC engine) for about 4 years. The problem only occurs in the winter months so I believe it is related to the ambient air temperature (or humidity). Usually I only get the problem on the first start of the day after the car is sitting outside overnight. It happens between about October and April/May. During the summer there is no problem.

When I try to start the car it initially fires up OK, but then over the next 5 - 10 seconds the idle becomes unstable and then the engine stops. It does not respond to the throttle during this period. I then have to repeat this usually 3 or 4 times, but up to 10!, before the idle remains stable and the car is driveable. Subsequent hot or cold starts are then OK until the next morning, and the car drives fine, although sometimes slightly hesitant in the first couple of miles.

I have had the car checked a few times by the local main dealer and a couple of independent VW specialists. The following have been checked and eliminated:

    - Main dealer said cold starting problem was not caused by EA189 update (2 years after update)
    - Fuel delivery system and fuel pressures checked by main dealer (all OK), fuel filter changed as it was "dirty" (no improvement)
    - It was suggested that the cranking battery voltage was low. I changed the battery - No improvement
    - Scans on VCDS show no faults, the engine temperaure (coolant) reading was correct for cold start
    - Glow plugs have been changed - No improvement

Current mileage is 113,000. The problem started at about 75,000 miles/2017 and is getting slowly worse. EA189 emissions software update was applied by VW in 2017.

This issue is driving me (& my wife) mad! I am not sure what to try next. A couple of ideas I had were changing the engine air intake sensor, or maybe the immobiliser is playing up when cold??

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

EA189 emissions software update was applied by VW in 2017

That was the worst thing you could have done as its not a legal requirement in the UK. There is a thread about this if you want to read it?

This isn't an easy question to answer on a forum.

Scans on VCDS show no faults.

Is that a genuine VCDS cable?

Even if there are no error codes.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

Post the VCDS log file it must be in CODE tags so we can see what it shows?

We have had members just post the top part of the VCDS log file which shows no malfunction in any section.

Maybe Crasher can think of something it could be as he is the expert in all VAG vehicle problem.

    Hi Keith

It was scanned by the main dealer and by the two independents. I have a print-out from the last one done in March which showed no issues. It was carried out with VCDS Release 19.6.2 (x64) data version 20200210 DS308.0 www. Ross-Tech.com. The last scan did give a Mass Air Flow Sensor stored intermittent fault P0101 00 [096], with a fault frequency of 1, about a week prior to the scan when the vehicle was travelling at 64km/h with a coolant temperature of 82 degC - so not thought to be relevant.

I can scan and upload the log report, but it has my name and car reg no. which I will need to obscure, unless i can PM it?

If it was scanned by a dealer it won't be a free scan so they must have given a printout of the scan.

Unless you want to scan that printout we don't know all the details.

    VAG Error Code: 16485/4794/7330/5667/4795/000257
    EOBD II Error Code: P0101

    Fault Location:
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70) - Circuit Range/Performance Problem/Implausible Signal

    Possible Cause:
    Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
    Loss of Power.
    Erratic Idle.

    Wiring/Connector(s).
Air Leak(s) after Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70).
Excessive restrictions in the Intake/Exhaust System.
Dirty air filter, clogged snow screen, clogged CAT.
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70) faulty,
Ground Spots corroded or Paint Residue.

    Possible Solutions:
    Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
    Check Intake Air Filter.
Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70).
    Check Earth Points.
    Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).
    Mass air flow vs upper threshold model < 60 - 800 kg/h.
    Lower threshold model < 0 - 400 kg/h.
    Load calculation > 18%.
    Fuel system < -17%.

    Special Notes:
In MY 1995-2002 (?) in Europe at VW diesel cars Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70) had the bad reputation of slowly losing his performance, causing loss of power. It's not a matter of defective or breaking down, but it is filthy / dirty (not easy to clean). You can check functionality by making a log in [01-engine], [Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) - 08], group 003 (3rd gear, full throttle, from 1700-4000rpm).
It is not uncommon for a TDI to set Implausible Signal Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) faults when the engine performance is reduced due to a mechanical problem. These mechanical problems may include, but are not limited to:
Faulty electric fuel pump or Restricted fuel filter. See the Fuel Pump Basic Settings for PD, PPD, and CR TDI Engines page for Basic Settings tips after replacement.
Excessive restrictions in the intake/exhaust system.
    Internal camshaft/valve/lifter problems.

    Tech Notes:
Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

    When is the code detected?:
A high voltage from the sensor is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM) under light load driving condition.
A low voltage from the sensor is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM).

    Description:
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70) is placed in the stream of intake air. It measures the intake flow rate by measuring a part of the entire intake flow. It consists of a hot film that is supplied with electric current from the Engine Control Module (ECM).

The temperature of the hot film is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) a certain amount. The heat generated by the hot film is reduced as the intake air flows around it. The more air, the greater the heat loss. Therefore, the Engine Control Module (ECM) must supply more electric current to maintain the temperature of the hot film as air flow increases. The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects the air flow by means of this current change.

As taken from my new EOBD II Fault Codes Software

I think the mass air flow fault was a one off stored fault that occured when the car was warmed up and being driven

As I've said: Post the VCDS log file it must be in CODE tags so we can see what it shows?

If you have posted 3 PDF files of the VCDS log file why couldn't you have posted the log file in CODE tags its easier to read rather than opening 3 PDF files?

CODE tags are like any other BR codes on the forum.

    e.g.

Bold is Bold you put [b]Bold[/b I've left of the last ] so you can see what I mean.

CODE tags are the same e.g.

    Code:
I don't know what CODE tags means?
    Any text inside [CODE] tags

OK, Here is the VCDS Report (it has been OCR'd so there may be the odd typo that I didn't find):
