Any ideas where I would start with something like this? About 2 years ago I had the same light on and the VW dealership I bought the car from replaced the "door loom" for about €300-€400. I'm hoping to avoid similar costs but it's the same door.

If you have a genuine VCDS cable make sure its registered online VCDS Dongle Registration

Then you can join the Ross-Tech forum. There are many threads about airbags. If you don't find a solution make a new thread about your problem with a full AutoScan added.

How to post an Auto-Scan

VAG Error Code: 9443093/9443091/9443146
EOBD II Error Code: B1017

Fault Location:
Driver's Side Airbag Crash Sensor - Open Circuit/Short Circuit to Positive

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

Wiring/Connector(s).

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).

As taken from my new EOBD II Fault Codes Software

You need something like VCDS as Keith says. What you should not do with an air bag system is start probing wires with a probe or multimeter as you can trigger the air bags.
