1 hour a small amount of swearing, a flat head screw driver and a Bike cable from halfords and the bonnet it open. I followed the guidance from Aquice27 so a big thank you, same failure of bonnet cable breaking out of it ball housing. Could not get the cable back in as no play in the cable so detached the housing from the sill above the lights using a flat head screwed driver to pry it off mounting and went to halfords bought a bicycle cable for £7.50 and the end of the cable was same size, inserted this into the socket closed the casing and whilst holding with one hand pulled on the end if the cable with plyers, and presto an open bonnet and no damage to the car and cost £7.50. Genuine part replacement ordered for £12.77.

I have had the same happen, I was driving back from Northern Ireland, at the ferry terminal went to top up the screen wash and the dreaded pull lever and nothing. The drive from Scotland to Wiltshire with very little washer fluid in the tank. Thankfully I managed to make it home without any issues.

So it looks like I shall be popping the wheel off and trying to get access. 🤞

Well well well, wheel off, wheel liner off and I'm in! Took me 30 mins and the bonnet is open!
Once you see the cable it's really easy!
Just wedge the junction box off the chassis and then pull the cable, and that was it!!
Can't belive vw wanted to smash the car to bits, what a relief :)
If anyone needs help in future with the same issue then give me a shout.

Jack it up, take the wheel off and remove the arch liner so you can access the cable and hopefully it is not the lock that is rusted solid like I had the other day. A 3G Passat and a simple service, 2.5 hours to get the bonnet open!
