Horn sounds when pressed in the 6 and 9 o'clock positions.

No sound when the 3 o'clock position is pressed??

VCDS showing no fault codes.

The horn only sounds.

Is that 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock the steering wheel position?

VCDS showing no fault codes.

That could be anything, clock spring, wiring/connectors/fuse(s).

What does VCDS show for steering wheel?

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

No faults showing when scanned (VCDS)

Yes The 3 o'clock and 9oclock are the wheel positions when set straight ahead

I'm removing the wheel at the weekend to check wiring connectors etc

I only discovered this when checking before MOT date.
