Thats the thing, the emulsion tube ! would you know how big a job to replace it, I suppose it means taking off the head and then retiming ect. Thanks Crasher

Tandem pump off and slide it out
Ah thats good news then. Crasher you sound like you know your stuff; so all in all do you suspect my problem might be caused by this emulsion tube, or would you suspect im barking up the wrong tree ?

Thanks for reply. I'm fairly sure the glowplugs are okay tbh; I only warm them up 5 times just to be sure. Regarding the torsion values; surely the people who done the diagnostics would have picked up on that. I was under the illusion that it was a fuel problem rather than timing so thanks for mentioning that. Another possible cause that's been mentioned to me regards a cable loom thing, dont know what its called, that runs beneath the rocker cover and attaches to the injectors; is it worth replacing that do you think ?

Thanks for this info. I will have to get these torsion values checked out then; as ive tried most things regarding fuel supply ect ect, is there anything else could be causing this I wonder. Can anyone recommend a mechanic to check and the torsion values, and readjust if needed ??? Im based in SE London/Kent
Hi, I have a suggestion to cure your problem which I think you will find works if you fit an inline non return valve just after the pump it will cure it. Try it 10 Mon job and about a fiver

The pipe feeding the pump as close as you can go. make sure you secure with descent clips to avoid air ingress , it's a simple 8 mm alloy non return valve outa motor factors, let me know how you get on

Thanks will try that, is that the pipe that goes in the front of the tandem pump as im looking at it from front of van, has black markings on the metal rail ?

Not sure , it will be the pipe from your filter feeding your pump, I've done this to loads of diesels over the years , if you want you can also fit one after the pump on the feed to injectors ! Won't do any harm . I would say it's your pump that's letting the fuel flow back toward the tank over night. Use good fuel line clips

Okay thanks, my tandem is bolted onto the cylinder head so theres no pipes feeding the injectors that I can see. The pump has two pipes, one at the front and easily accessible, and another at the back that has a tee piece in it the goes off towards the air intake I think. Ive lost my bloody Haynes Manual now arrrrghh

I've not fitted one to an SDI but principle is the same the TDI pump has a built in non return valve and these fail Peugeot and citreon do it too , if you can trace the pipe from your filter to your pump fit it as close as you can to the pump, stops it running back. The joys of motoring !

Okay thanks ive ordered one so for a few pound cant go wrong. Im sure i read somewhere that there is a check valve inside the metal fuel rail that feeds the pump (there is rubber hoses on each end, one from the filter, and one to the pump). If it turns out to be something as simple as putting in a check valve, then these specialist mechanics should hang their heads in shame. Anyway I'll let you know how I get on, will be handy for other poor people in the future.
