VW Passat 2013 ignition key not staying in slot

Hi all,
My 2013 Passat 2.0i ignition key is not staying in position and this the engine is switching off.
My 8 yr old son decided to push the key right into the ignition slot when I was out of the car. He said it got jammed and then had to pull it out. I only become aware when I tried to start the engine and as soon as starting the key just pops back out & the engine shuts down.
Any help at all would be much appreciated?

I suspect the ignition lock unit known a D9 is broken, this is VW part number 3C0 905 843 AE and costs £70.40 from a VW dealer. It is easy to take out with the special pliers VAS6339


but I have done it with two thin screwdrivers crossed. Once out a new one is plug and play, no coding.
