hello guys
I have exactly the same issue.
long crack on cold start or if left parked for a while. Sounds like doesnt have enough power some times but has a new battery. Sometimes starts then switches off straight away then have to start again. Sometimes fires up first first time. Once started drives perfect doesn't skip a beat. I'm thinking mine also must be the starter. Where can I buy the better bosch one? And how much would be labour to fit? I'm in West Midlands area if anyone can help close by willing to drive to you or know of any genuine good garage .
I have a passat 2011 2.0 tdi 170bhp.
I haven't to money to throw at it as most garages not very clued up and just rather change parts then diagnose the problem first.

Hi Tom
Did you buy a new bosch starter or just the brushes cleaning spray and grease?
Total £35 you done well mate. I wish I could, just haven't the tools or probably knowledge.

Update. I took my car to have the starter motor checked. He advised to have my flywheel checked first. The reason being the engine shakes a lot when starting and he thinks that is more a flywheel issue. It is also now starting then turning off more. Then I have to crank it again. Sometimes 2 or 3 times. Is that flywheel issue? Could it have too much movement causing the starting issue? He said maybe too much play in the flywheel as these cars have like dual springs or something in the flywheel.

What do you mean Tom? Drive car for a while then stop and put it in neutral? What you mean car will swim from side to side? Car drives fine. No noises or anything.

Do you think if I take to a clutch flywheel specialist they will be able to know? What is the cost to replace both these days? Supply and fit?

No never had that done. Don't even know who can do that

Im going to take it to someone to check the flywheel first. If the cranking rpm if off what does that mean and how is that fixed?
