Your car has the DQ381 wet clutch seven speed and these are turning into a disaster which is made worse by a software update designed to help!

From the service record I can see Marshal VW Milton Keynes did something on 11-07-22 at 35109 miles shown as a workshop remark, do you know what was done?

How many miles now?

Apart from the mech, electric drive unit and clutch there are no spares for this box, the only solution is a new box 0GC 300 040 TX 00V which is £6450… o_O

New to the forums Midlands based, similar issue with a slight twist.. 19 plate Tiguan with 46k miles

Few months prior had insufficient voltage in the battery to start the vehicle all fine after a "jump start"

Recently had the Gearbox emergency mode - ok to drive on with only even gears

Sporadic fault occurring after driving for 40-50 miles with it returning to limp mode.
After engine off for 30mins all is well again and the dash warning lights none existing.

Managed to get a diagnosis with engine light on pointing to position sensor for clutch 1-electric fault.

Few garages have given varying prices for a repair at 1400 to unit replacement of ÂŁ2500 all in, to the top end of ÂŁ4500 with clutch replacement too to ensure the fault is resolved.

Could this simply be a case of poor battery health causing issues with the electrics?

You have the now becoming infamous DQ381 box, it is turning into a disaster; if I was the head of VW Germany I would be very concerned about some sort of class action over this box. Unlike even the extremely unreliable DQ200 where we will repair them (99% of the time a new Mechatronic) we will not do anything to the DQ381 apart from fitting a genuine VW exchange unit which comes with a two year wattany, part number 0GC 300 044 GX 001 and ÂŁ5505.25 plus installation

Thanks for your reply here, turning into a nightmare.

A couple of garages have advised to check the battery before proceeding with costly unit replacement although I'm tempted to take the hit and take it to a VW garage for them to diagnose and attempt a complaint claim "not fit for purpose" and see where we go from there.

Is there a possibility (even slight) that a new battery could resolve the issue?

Modern cars are HIGHLY sensitive to battery voltage. When using the dealer system ODIS, if it detects the voltage drop below 12v it stops, flags a warning and will not continue until it is over 12v so even with a healthy car and new battery, we cannot use ODIS without the battery being on charge. I was setting up a new AdBlue pump yesterday on a 2019 A6 and forgot to turn on the battery charger and I had walked away as it was carrying out an engine ECU software update which takes ages, I went back an hour later and it had stopped as I tuned my back and done nothing...

Hi I have a seat Leon - went for a clutch change due to juddering and noises only to find out the mech on the dq200 couldn’t go into gear 5 and 7! Very expensive so I’ve had the mech unit ordered by the VAG specialist from TPS hoping that solves it all! Paying over 3 grand in total for mech and the clutch change + labour!!

question - mechanic mentioned it comes with a two year warranty.. how does this work if the worst case scenario occurs?

I've just recently tried to push a goodwill claim through VW but got denied as VW didn't change the gearbox oil at 40k, been quoted ÂŁ2440 all in for parts and labour (mech unit only) and they've also offered 2 years warranty.

Reasonable price for what I've been quoted elsewhere but with 2 years warranty being a big difference, so I've asked for them to place the order.

When I asked if an issue arises with the same part within the 2 years I only pay the diagnostic fee.
That's specific to the mechatronic unit though so any other gearbox/clutch issues aren't included.

They pushed to get VW all in for 2 years additional warranty at ÂŁ900, I just need them to confirm in writing it'll cover me for everything despite not having VW services etc.

For your situation I'd ask for them to confirm what's covered in the warranty, and get them to stick it in an email back.
Might be parts and labour but would be strange for them to cover a clutch as they'd argue it's down to "driver error"

The DQ200 is looked at in three sections, clutch pack, Mechatronic and the “base unit”, i.e. the gearbox itself. Virtually no parts are available for the base unit but they seem quite reliable and we have only had to replace a couple. The TPS warranty is indeed two years and backed by the appropriate brand dealer network as many parts can fit all six main VAG brands. HOWEVER, in practice, just pray you never need it, the system is broken and not fit for purpose and this is from a number of painful experiences. In practice the appropriate dealer doesn’t want to know as they didn’t sell the part as TPS competes against their own service and repair operations. What would happen is your garage would have to book your car in with them and take it in for diagnostics. The problem is that typically this will be a five to six week wait and they throw a proviso at the garage that initially the work is fully chargeable until they get approval from VAG UK over the warranty, so if they don’t agree or feel the work was done incorrectly, you and your garage are stuffed.

@Danny-LD what is your cars VIN?

Hi Crasher, WVGZZZ5NZKW879442 DQ381 box

Part number on the quote from VW is
V0GC 325 025 EZ 39

@Danny-LD I put the VIN into the Digital Service System and there is no 40000 mile transmission service, it is shown as being due

2027-08--80000

Wish I'd read this forum before buying a new Tiguan Black edition 200hp 4motion. It was delivered on 19th April 2024, I've driven it less than 600 miles in 2 weeks and the gearbox has gone into limp mode and it has been recovered to dealers, what hope can I possibly have?

It has the DQ381 gearbox so the usual outcome is a full exchange gearbox part number 0GC 300 018 SX 00A. This is what is known as a VIP or Vehicle Intelligent Part which has to be ordered from Germany using the VIN and arrives in a crate at £5881.27 retail inc. VAT and then it has to be installed, fluid filled, level checked and coded. Personally I would not buy a vehcile with this box, in fact if was given one for free, I would “do the math” first.

Crasher, you were, as I suspected, correct the diagnosis completed this morning is that the mechattonics unit needs replacing and these are not available. They can only back order them with no timescales.:(
Still find it unbelievable this happens to a car with less than 600 miles on it!??!

And there was me hoping that VW must have got the DQ381 sorted by now, surley! They are always on back order as they are VIN specific, they take about two weeks to arrived although last year with a DQ200, one of my customers passed away whilst waiting...
